The mission of Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) led
by co-chairmen of Committee on Europe visited Denmark
(13 April 2012)

They had a fruitful meeting with Minister Mr. Martin Lidegaard
(Minister for Climate, Energy and Construction)
over the future cooperation in energy and climate field since Denmark
is a leading country in renewable energies and Japan in energy-saving.
For lunch, Mr. Thomas Bustrup, Deputy Director General of DI (Danish Industry)
hosted networking lunch with Danish compnies. Also they had a courtesy visit to
Minister Ms. Margrethe Vestager (Minister of Economics and the Interior)
where they discussed further support for the Japan-EU EPA
(Economic Partnership Agreement) and the economic
cooperation between Japan and Denmark in general.

Ambassador Sano’s visit to Arla Foods (11 April 2012)

Ambassador Sano visited the Arla Foods factory in Slagelse
on 11 April 2012. Arla Foods is the largest dairy company in
Denmark, and supplies different kinds of dairy products to not
only Denmark but also the United Kingdom, the Netherlands
and Sweden. The factory is the biggest milk producing company
in Arla,and Ambassador Sano exchanged ideas on ‘green growth’
and other topics.

Lecture by Asger Rojle Christensen and the screening
of a Documentary “Can you see Our Lights?
First Festival after the Tsunami” (27 March 2012)


At Ordrupgaard Museum, Ambassador Sano has made an
opening remark for the lecture/documentary screening
event organized by the embassy. Mr. Asger Rojle Christensen
(DR online news editor) made a lecture based on his recent
visit to Japan and discussed in detail about the challenges
facing the local municipalities one year after the Earthquake.
Following the lecture, the NHK documentary has been shown.
The documentary focused on the people living in the badly
affected area from the Tsunami and the process of planning
and making it happen their favorite local summer festival,
despite the numerous challenges lying ahead. Close to 70
Danish and Japanese people came by and listened to the
lecture and the documentary very seriously.

Lecture by Ms. Takako Bundgaard(20 March 2012)

Ms. Takako Bundgaard made a short lecture on “Social Welfare
in Denmark, the current situation and the challenges:
Recommendation to Japan” at the ambassador's residence.
Among the participants on the day were a number of Japanese
researchers, UN staffs, and students who were seriously
engaged in listening to the thought provoking lecture.

The Commemoration of the One Year Anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami(12 March 2012)

On 12th March, Japanese Ambassador Toshio Sano hosted a reception commemorating the one year anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

The over 300 distinguished guests who have all been involved in helping Japan included H.R.H. Crown Prince Frederik, Mr. Børge Dahl, President of the Supreme Court, Ms. Margrethe Vestager, Minister for Economics and the Interior, Mr. Martin Lidegaard, Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Mr. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Former Prime Minister, Mr. Uffe Ellemann Jensen, Former Foreign Minister, Ms. Grethe Rostbøll, Former Minister for Culture, and Permanent Secretaries from several ministries.

The ceremony started with a beautiful recital by the Copenhagen Chamber Choir Camerata and was followed by the lighting of a candle by H.R.H. Crown Prince Frederik. Thereafter, speeches were held by Ambassador Sano, Mr. Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Mr. Martin Lidegaard who spoke on behalf of the Danish government.

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the cause of aiding Japan.

The Commemoration of the One Year Anniversary
of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

Ambassador Sano briefed TV 2 News on the current situation
in Japan, and especially about the process of reconstruction
following the one year anniversary of Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

Visit to Anjo and Wakayama(16 January-17 January 2012)

On 16th January, Ambassador Sano visited Anjo City in Aichi Prefecture,
which is a Friendship City of the city of Kolding. Here he met
Mr. Gaku Kamiya, the Mayor of the City and visited Denpark,
a Denmark-inspired theme park which opened in 1997.

After visiting Anjo City, he travelled to Wakayama Prefecture
where he met Mr. Yoshinobu Nisaka, the Governor of Wakayama.
Wakayama has a special relationship with Frederikshavn in Jutland.
On 17th January, he visited the towns of Hidaka and Mihama in
Wakayama Prefecture. It was close to here that Mr. Johannes Knudsen,
Chief Marine Engineer on the Danish registered ship, “Ellen Maersk”,
lost his life trying to save Japanese fishermen from drowning in
the sea in February 1957. Since then, the people in the two towns
have had a strong relationship with Frederikshavn and last year
Hidaka High School and Frederikshavn Gymnasium established
a friendship agreement.

Ambassador Sano held a lecture about Denmark for 80 students at
Hidaka High School and he met the Vice Mayor of Hidaka, the Chairman
of the Hidaka Town Parliament and the Mayor of Mihama.

Ambassador Sano paid his respects to Mr Johannes Knudsen by laying
bouquets of marigolds (morgenfruer), which were Mr. Knudsen’s favourite
flowers, at his memorial stone in the Takui district in Hidaka and at
the bronze statue of Mr. Knudsen in Hinomisaki Park. ____________________________

Visit to the North Jylland region (Aalborg, Skagen, Frederikshavn)
(14-16 November 2011)

From 14-16 November, Ambassador Sano visited small
and medium companies in Skagen which have direct trade ties with foreign
partners. Ambassador also met with specialist in robotics at the
University of Aalborg. Towards the end of his visit, he made a visit
to Mr. Johannes Knudsen’s grave situated in the suburbs of
Frederikshavn Municipality.

Particpated in the opening of Handi-Art 2011 Twin-Towns (24 August 2011)

Ambassador Sano participated in the opening ceremony of the
exhibition Handi-Art 2011 Twin-Towns in Næstved. A delegation from
Næstved's twin town Narita in Japan also participated.

Visiting the World Scout Jamboree 2011 in Kristianstad, Sweden
(28-29 July 2011)

Ambassador Sano visited the opening ceremony of the 22nd World Scout
Jamboree on 28 and 29 July in Kristianstad, Sweden. The theme for the
Jamboree is 'simply scouting.' The next Jamboree will be in Japan and
in the Japanese camp were almost 1000 scouts who had come from Japan.

Visit to the Faroe Islands (20-22 June 2011)

Ambassador Sano visited the Faroe Islands on a programme arranged
by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
Photo 1 50,000 people live in the harsh climate of the Faroe Islands where they
have strived to maintain their own traditions. They have their own
language and developed their own culture.
Photo 2 We watched the Faroese Ring Dance, which strengthens
the solidarity of the people of the islands. The Prime Minister
of the Faroe Islands gave background information.
Photo 3 The main industry of the islands is fisheries and this provides
a lot of jobs.

Accompanying Crown Prince Frederik on his visit to Japan (14 June 2011)

Ambassador Sano accompanied Crown Prince Frederik on his visit to the
afflicted area and the city Higashimatsushima. The children in the pictures
are from Akaiminami Nursery School and Hamashi Elementary School in
Higashimatsushima.
"I just pray that the reconstruction will be as soon as possible".

Visit to Egmont Højskolen in Hou (3 June 2011)

This Højskole is famous for the fact that people with disabilities
study together with the other students. More than several hundred
Japanese students have already studies here. Mr. Yutaka Kataoka, a
Japanese teacher at the school, is planning to invite people with
disabilities and their helpers from the areas affected by the Great East
Japan Earthquake to the school for 6 months next year.

The opening of “Sculpture by the sea” (2 June 2011)

Ambassador Sano attended the opening of the exhibition “Sculpture
by the sea” in Aarhus on 2 June. The concept was introduced from
Australia and HRH Crown Princess Mary made a speech at the opening.
The exhibition shows the works of artists from many countries including
the works of 4 Japanese artists. It continues until 3 July.

Speech at Green Technology Tour 2011 in Lolland (1 June 2011)

Ambassador Sano gave a lecture on Damage and its Impact over Japanese
economy after the disaster and outlook of energy policy in Japan for
environment related companies at Green Technology Tour 2011 in Lolland.

Attending Japanese Cultural Evening (5 May 2011)

Ambassador Sano attended the Japanese Cultural evening held by Teatret
OM in Ringkøbing. The ambassador had a good time enjoying Japanese
Dance, Japanese Drums, Japanese Lion-dance and Japanese food, sushi.

Attending the Andersen Award 2011(2 April 2011)

The Andersen Park at Funabashi received the Andersen Award 2011.
The Hans Christian Andersen house for children in Odense, Fyrtøjet,
has had an active relationship with Andersen Park and through these
meaningfull events I anticipate an increasingly active cultural exchange.

25 March Ambassador Sano introduced Prof. Takagi at the lecture on
Kana at Ordrupgaard Museum and attended the lecture.

Attending the 12th Matsumae Cup (Judo) (19 February 2011)

19 February Ambassador Sano attended the 12th Matsumae Cup held
in Helsingør. The young participants from Japan, from Tokai University
and International Budo University, fought well. I wish them good luck in
future matches.

Concert with Hokkaido Farmer's Orchestra and Silkeborg Chamber
Orchestra (13 February 2011)

13 Februray 2011 Hokkaido Farmer's Orchestra held a joint concert
with Silkeborg Chamber Orchestra in Silkeborg. There has long been
an exchange between Hokkaido and Jutland through agriculture and
hopefully, this unique event will further deepen the relationship.
Present at the concert was, apart from the ambassador, also the
mayor of Silkeborg.

Visit to CareWare 2011 (12 February 2011)

On 12th February, Ambassador Sano visited CareWare 2011 in
Aarhus which was an exhibition of welfare technology with the
theme, "health at home". He looked around a number of
booths, including those of Japanese companies from Osaka, and
tried some of the technologies for himself like a shoe measuring
device and an arm support system.

Ambassador Sano's comments: "It's interesting to see the
difference between Japanese and Danish companies in as far as the
Japanese companies introduce mainly new technologies while the
Danish companies focus more on convenience, efficiency and
design of devices which have already been put into use."
