In July Danish Museum of Art and Design open the exhibition THE POETRY OF SHAPE, a presentation of almost 100 works of lacquerwareby the Japanese artist Nagatoshi Onishi (born 1933).
Onishi is an artist with an international reputation and he is an institution in the art of Japanese lacquerware, both as practicing craftsman and formerly as professor in the subject of lacquerware at the Academy of Art in Tokyo, a subject he is now teaching at his own center for lacqerware GANSEN at Moroto outside Tokyo.
Onishi is inspired by nature and taken with Scandinavian design. He has renewed the tradition of urushi with lacquerware in a idiom, that excels by great simplicity. Organic shapes stands pure and stringent in unicolored vessels, bowls and objects in red, black and sometimes gold. It is important for Onishi, that the objects are not only visually appealing, but can also function in daily use, where they are worn to a new beauty.
