Japan-Denmark Cooperation in Science & Technology

1. On 23 January 2008, Amb. Fumiaki Takahashi, Executive Director of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Mr. Hans Müller Pedersen, Deputy Director General of the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (DASTI) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Science Cooperation. 

2. The signing of the MOU is one of the achievements of the summit meeting in Tokyo on 21 November 2006 between the then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in which they discussed further cooperation in science and technology between the two countries.

3. Based on the MOU, JST and DASTI have agreed to establish a new scheme for the joint funding of Japanese-Danish cooperative research projects within Life Sciences. JST and DASTI respectively aim at co-funding at least three joint projects in the next three years. JST and DASTI will announce further information about the scheme at a later date.

Introduction of Working Holiday Scheme between Japan and Denmark

Starting October 1, 2007

The Government of Japan and Denmark agreed to introduce a Working Holiday scheme between both countries starting on October 1, 2007. Mr. Masaki Okada, Ambassador of Japan and Ms. Liselotte Plesner, Political Director, Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exchanged Note Verbales regarding this scheme at the Ministry on June 28, 2007.

This scheme provides wider opportunities, particularly for young people to experience culture and general way of life in Denmark and Japan. Its purpose is to promote mutual understanding between Japan and Denmark by making it possible for citizens of one country to enter the other primarily for a holiday for an extended period. It also allows them to engage in employment as an incidental aspect to their holiday in order to supplement their travel funds.　

Applicant Prerequisites for the Scheme are as follows:

On application the Government of Japan, through the Embassy of Japan in Denmark, will issue, free of charge, a working holiday visa valid for a period of one year from the date of issue to Danish nationals who satisfy each of the following requirements: They should

(a) be Danish nationals who are ordinarily resident in Denmark at the time of application for the said visa;

(b) be aged between eighteen and thirty years, inclusive, at the time of application for the said visa;

(c) intend primarily to go on holiday to Japan for a period of up to one year;

(d) have not previously been issued the said visa;

(e) be persons who are not accompanied by dependants unless those dependants are in possession of the said visa or otherwise;

(f) possess a valid Danish passport;

(g) possess a return travel ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket;

(h) possess sufficient funds for their maintenance during the period of initial stay in Japan; and

(i) have good health and a sound background.
