Harmonium - Cinemateket's Film of the Month is screened on 10 consecutive days. The Japanese drama 'Harmonium' by director Koji Fuukada was awarded with the Un certain regard Jury Prize in Cannes 2016. It is part family drama, part thriller.
Classics of Japanese Cinema - the Pain of Love. 12 carefully selected films each from Japanese directors spanning the period 1930-1990 (Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Shiro Toyoda, Keisuke Kinoshita, Nagisa Oshima and more). Since one of the main criteria for the selection is the overlapping theme of 'tragic love', the selection is quite different from regular overviews of the highlights of Japanese cinema.

Johannes Larsen (1867-1961) kom aldrig til Japan, men i sin kunst rejste han og fandt inspiration i japansk kunst og kultur. Udstillingen "Johannes Larsen og Japansk træsnit" viser to unikke samlinger af japanske træsnitbøger og træsnit i dansk privateje sammen med japansk inspirerede værker af Johannes Larsen. De to privatsamlinger er resultatet af to privatpersoners Japan-fascination, men i et større perspektiv også resultatet af den åbning mellem Danmark og Japan, som fejres i 2017 med 150-året for oprettelsen af de diplomatiske forbindelser mellem Japan og Danmark. Museet fejrer jubilæet ved at udstille disse to samlinger og rejse spørgsmlet om den japanske kunsts indflydelse på Johannes Lasen, der fødtes i netop 1867, året hvor de diplomatiske forbindelser indledtes. Ud over at give indblik i den helt sælige japanske træsnitkultur, viser udstillingen værker af Johannes Larsen og diskuterer nogle af de paradokser, som den fynske udgave af japanismen var del af.

About Night of the Kabukimono:
Kabukimono (歌舞伎者) wander the streets, seeking an audience to join their new experiments in the underworld theatre, full of bizarre costumes and outlandish performances. Finding the streets empty on this spring night in Osaka, in the year 1743, the Kabukimono troupe (finally) finds an empty building, a title above the door – Damhuskroen-za. The Damhuskroen Theatre. Keeping their senses alert for Samurai who might be in the area, they sneak into the theatre to discover a perfect place to hold their performances, a strange yet welcoming venue, and they begin to decorate, and prepare their show. Soon, it is opening night and passer-bys have begun to take notice of the work being done at the Dam Hus Kro-za.
Commoners, samurai, farmers, artists, geishas, and all levels and genders of society allow their curiosity to overrule the social structure, and enter the theatre. They realize this is unlike the other Kabuki theatres popping up around Japan, rather, this is a participatory theatre where everyone joins and performs their own tale with their own characters. Everyone must participate in this kaleidoscope of excessive performances. Upon entering, they are told the secrets of the theatre, and they rejoice: it’s a chance to explore a new persona. Thus, they become their personas, and decorate their faces and bodies, expressing their new persona’s nature: passionate and righteous red, jealous and nefarious blues, supernaturally powered green, and noble purple. They put on their ornate, beautiful, thoughtful, outlandish, bizarre, grotesque. They rehearse their poses and their lines and prepare.
The scene is set, the audience becomes actors, and the play begins: A wild and unpredictable exploration of everyday interactions, of great samurai battles, of enchanting geisha tales, an exploration of self. This theatre pushes the boundaries of what Kabuki has been and could ever be – for everyone joins in, and everyone is an actor, for just one night.
In the morning, exhausted and exhilarated, the participants leave the theatre, and turn around to take one last look, to discover a pile of ashes where the theatre had been moments before. No smoke, no smell of fire… had they imagined it all? Rubbing their tired eyes, they look at their hands, and see the vibrant reds, blues, greens and purple from their makeup. No, this was a truer night than all others.

SORT/HVID has the honour of presenting four dramatic works from three Japanese playwrights. The works have never before been presented outside Japan and presents aspects of Japanese society and intelletual life, the Danish public rarely gets a glimpse of. For four days the Danish actors will work with the texts in a previously untested exchange work between Japanese playwrights and Danish actors. On the fifth day the texts will be presented to the public n an open reading. It is our pleasure to present the following works for the first time for a Danish audience: Long rows of gravestones by Yoshiyuki Fukukdas, After the golem and You killed me by Katsumi Sasaki and 4four by Takeshi Kawamura. Katsumi Sasaki and Takeshi Kawamura will be in Copenhagen during the hole week.
The reading will take place on 19 May at Theatre SORT/HVID. The reading will be hosted by Danish playwright and scholar in Japanese language and culture, Mads Mazanti Jensen.

In the course of 2017, visiting teams of foreign (herunder Japanese) and Danish artist will visit and live in different villages. Here they will create a work of art in interactions with residents.
The project is rooted in Viborg Kunsthal, who wish to bring contemporary art out into the villages and closer to the people. The residents in the villages will feel ownership towards the artwork and project being directly involved in the creative process and hereby gain insigt to the artist's ways of working.

The anniversary concert “The Harmonious Sound of Koto” is a concert of traditional Japanese music featuring exponents of the highest quality from the Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Denmark. “Koto” is a traditional Japanese stringed musical instrument, and the main Koto player Mr. Shoin Hagioka succeeded to the name and established mastership as Shoin Hagioka Ⅳ in 1980. This is the first time for TUA, which is the only national university of the arts in Japan that offers traditional Japanese music programs, to perform in Denmark. We hope that you enjoy “The Harmonious Sound of Koto” in ensemble with other traditional Japanese instruments –the Shamisen, Shakuhachi and Tsudzumi.

As part of the 150 years anniversary of Denmark and Japan’s diplomatic relationship, a group of traditional Japanese Noh-theatre performers will visit Copenhagen on the 23rd and 24th of September.
September 23rd (Sat) takes place from 16:00 – 17:30 in the Grand Hall (Festsalen) of Designmuseum Danmark. The performance will present a classical program including the Noh play Hagoromo and a series of shorter Noh-songs and -dances.

6 October: Here we will open the next part of our Japanese exhibitions at Kløvermarksvej. This time the focus is on Danish furniture design classics in Japanese interpretations. The furniture of e.g. Finn Juhl, Ib Kofod-Larsen and Nanna Ditzel from the Japanese furniture company Kitani are presented in a Japanese garden in the middle of the exhibition space at Kløvermarksvej. Besides the zealous worship of the craftsmanship and the fascination of Danish furniture, Kitani is also known for contributing to the construction of a 1:1 version of Finn Juhl's house in the mountains of Hida Takayama, Japan - as a special tribute to the furniture master.

Kimono Haori - Wearing Art
Kimono in Japanese means "something to wear".
It specifically refers to the national dress of Japan, celebrated worlswide for its distrinctive, elegant silhouette, unchanged through more than one thousand five hundred years.
Haori are casual silk jackets, little sisters of the long robe kimono. They exude grace, sensuality, empowerment and effortless refinement.
All the haori jackets on show are made of exquisite natural silks, a most noble textile, warm in winter, fresh in summer .

"Communication Beyond Words"
The exhibition showing the result of the collaboration work between Denmark and Japan will take place from 15th to 22nd of November.
The exhibition will show you the discussion process over the 3 themes of bilateral architectural competition between 3 Japanese architects and 3 Danish architects, which took place in summer.
All the proposals gathered from all over Japan and Denmark will be displayed, especially focusing on the winners of the 3 competitions.

“Skyggen(The Shadow) – A Chamber Opera by Aya Yoshida” is a collaborative project between artists from Denmark and Japan celebrating the 150th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Denmark-Japan.
The Copenhagen-based Japanese composer Aya Yoshida has written the music and libretto for this chamber opera. It is inspired by the original fairy tale “The Shadow (Skyggen)”, written in 1847 by the famous Danish author H.C. Andersen. The visual part of the performance is created by the Danish artist Magnus Pind Bjerre and the Japanese calligrapher Suitou Nakatsuka.

4th year architecture- and design students will work on a project about collapsible furniture. 1st of February they will travel to Kyoto and exhibit at the KIT (Kyoto Institute of Technology) In Kyoto. A group of Japanese design students will visit Copenhagen in November 16 and join a workshop with Danish students conducted by associate professor Keita Tatara from KIT. Both Japanese and Danish students will work on the same project and exhibit together in Kyoto. The project will be informed by a series of lectures about Japanese craft, design and culture.
