Denmark and Japan; Exchanges between municipalities Vol. 6 Noboribetsu and Faaborg-Midtfyn

The city of Noboribetsu, with its population of 46,881 people, is located in the center of Hokkaido Shifutsu Toya National Park. The city has hot springs and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Hokkaido, attracting more than 3 million visitors every rear. At the same time, Noboribetsu has developed as a part of Muroran Industrial Area, the most advanced heavy industry region in Hokkaido. Mayor OGASAWARA Haruichi states as follows;
“Hot springs enjoy so abundant kinds of qualities here and it is called “department store of hot springs”. Together with rich nature and unique theme parks, you would surely feel “hygge” and refresh yourself. Please do visit Noboribetsu, “place of hygge”. “
The city of Faaborg-Midtfyn has 51,552 population and is located in southern part Fyn Island. In 2007, 5 municipalities were merged into Faaborg-Midtfyn at the time of municipality reform. The name of Faaborg, the largest municipality among the merged ones, and that of Midtfyn, which means the middle of Fyn Island in Danish were combined. The city has a breathtaking port and it is an ancient city which enjoys about 800 years history. There are Egeskov Castle and a house where Mr. Carl Nielsen, the most distinguished Danish composer spent his boyhood and others. Faaborg-Midtfyn is vigorously promoting new investment and business by the local enterprises. The city also develops cultural facilities where the young citizens can enhance a sense of belonging to Faaborg-Midtfyn through voluntary cultural activities.
In July 1990, Noboribetsu Marine Park NIXE was erected, inspired by Egeskov Castle in Faaborg-Midtfyn. That triggered the exchanges between the two cities, and in 1997 they exchanged “Bond of Friendship”, followed by conclusion of Friendship City relations in 2007. Since 1992, a group of junior high school students from Noboribetsu began to visit Denmark for exchange. They have had precious opportunities to participate in some classes at schools on Faaborg-Midtfyn and to stay at Danish host family’s place and so on. Noboribetsu has received young trainees from Denmark and many staff from the municipality and medical and social welfare personnel from Faaborg-Midtfyn. During the visits, they saw medical and social welfare facilities and engaged in exchanges with local Noboribetsu citizens.
In December 2020, Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu revisited Faaborg-Midtfyn on the invitation by Mayor Hans Stavnsager, following the previous visit in November 2019. They discussed the present and future exchanges between Faaborg-Midtfyn, Noboribetsu and Japan, while visiting museum, cinema and culture center, blacksmith and chocolate factory in the city.
