Ambassador Uyama’s Visit to Frederikshavn

2024/8/10
On 9 and 10 August, Ambassador Uyama Hideki and Mrs. Uyama Mariko attended a series of events on the occasion of the 500 years anniversary of the town of Sæby on the invitation from Ms. Birgit Hansen, Mayor of Frederikshavn. The Ambassador and Mrs. Uyama joined in the grand celebration together with the Mayor and other people from the Municipality, local business and cultural organizations as well as many citizens of Sæby.
The Ambassador also had a meeting with the Mayor, expressed his deep respect for Mr. Johannes Knudsen, chief engineer of a Danish cargo ship "Ellen Maersk", who was from Frederikshavn and lost his life by trying to rescue a drowning Japanese sailor of a fishing boat off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture in 1957, and expressed his gratitude to the Mayor and Frederikshavn Municipality for their great contribution to the long-term exchanges and cooperation between Wakayama and Frederikshavn including exchanges of high-school students.
After the ceremony, the Ambassador visited Mr. Knudsen’s grave and laid flowers, commemorating his brave humanistic deed.
