2026/4/23
Award
On April 23rd, Ambassador Mikio Mori hosted the Ambassador's commendation ceremony in honor of Professor Kei Sakamoto of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, at the Ambassador's residence.

Under beautiful sunny skies, approximately 50 colleagues, friends, and fellow researchers gathered to celebrate, including distinguished leaders such as Professor Dario Alessi (Director, Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit: MRC PPU), Professor Juleen R. Zierath (Executive Director, Center for Basic Metabolic Research: CBMR), Professor Jens Nielsen (CEO, BioInnovation Institute), and Professor Ken Arnold (Director, Medical Museion; Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen). Their presence added to the warmth and significance of the celebration.

Professor Sakamoto has dedicated his research to uncovering the mechanisms behind conditions of metabolism, such as diabetes and obesity—diseases that affect countless people in today's world. His outstanding contributions have earned him widespread recognition across the global scientific community, and on April 7, 2026, he has been elected as an International Member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), one of the most prestigious learned societies—the first Japanese national ever to receive this honour.

We are confident that Professor Sakamoto's remarkable achievements will serve as a bridge connecting Japan, Denmark, and the world, contributing to the health and happiness of many people for years to come.
