2026/4/29
The Government of Japan has announced the 2026 Spring Conferment of Decorations.
Ms. Anne-Louise Sommer, Director of the Designmuseum Danmark will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in recognition of her contribution to introducing Japanese culture to Denmark and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and Denmark.
Director Sommer became the Director of Designmuseum Danmark, which was founded in 1890 and has a history spanning almost 140 years, in 2011. Since then, she has actively organised exhibitions featuring Japanese art and design, making a significant contribution to promoting Japanese culture in Denmark and deepening understanding of Japan. From 2015 to 2019, the ‘Learning from Japan’ exhibition showcased Japanese ukiyo-e, ceramics and graphic materials, alongside Danish ceramics, architectural and furniture designs, which was inspired by Japan.
In 2022, the museum launched a permanent exhibition of “Tsuba(handguard for Japanese sword)” featuring approximately 2,000 artistically crafted tsuba, followed by an exhibition of books and tools showcasing Japanese craftsmanship in 2023, a Ukiyo-e exhibition in 2024, and from February to August this year, exhibitions of Japanese posters and Katsushika Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Sommer for her remarkable contributions to introducing Japanese culture to Denmark and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and Denmark.
